BLUE TEA™
Blue tea™ represents a half-way stage between green and black tea. The leaves undergo a brief oxidation.
Blue tea™ is also called Oolong which means “black dragon”, and occasionally Bohea (or Bohe or even Bou) which is a deformation of Wu Yi, the name of the famous mountain in China’s Fujian Province where the most highly esteemed blue tea is made.

« Tea from Beyond the Skies » The parcels of tea in the Namring garden, created in 1855 by the British, belong to Jhinglam and Poomong at 1,220 and 1,370 meters in altitude. The remarkable character of the Namring Terroir as well as the combination of the planter's admirable work coupled with Mariage Frères' unique savoir-faire give birth to this splendid tea with myriad aromatic nuances. Dried leaves: The downy buds and full, twisted young leaves unleash an aroma of blueberry glaze. Infused leaves: A bouquet of buttercup scored with the fresh fragrance of fern. Liquor: Shimmering gold leaf. The enveloping umami texture is joined by rich notes of sultana and almond. Fruity notes of stewed cherry sprinkled with cardamom flood the palate before a silky and seductive finale evokes warm biscuit drizzled with elderberry syrup. Blue paradise.

A sensuous journey to Southern Africa. For generations, a family plantation known for the quality of its teas sits nestled at 1,150m in altitude, in a territory with infinite natural resources, sustained by a climate marked by the rainy season from November to March. Local tea plants well-adapted to this unique Terroir produce artisanal harvests rich in flavour; the young leaves, delicately harvested by hand, are quickly crafted in the estate’s atelier into this particular tea. Dried leaves: The handsome whole leaves shine in amber and acacia and emit a sweet fragrance evoking luscious pound cake married to an invigorating aroma of Bengal quince. Infused leaves: Azure-gleaming celadon, exhaling a scent of ripe Mirabelle and a fresh bouquet of cedar forest. Liquor: Luminous gold. A fruity score of almond elegantly combined with a woody oriental note. Issued from a garden respecting the principles of biodynamic agriculture Celebrating its special relationship with the planter of this garden, Mariage Frères proposes the first Darjeeling 2018 summer harvest. In the heart of the lush Mirik valley the tea plants of Phuguri, planted in 1878, are protected by a forest of bamboo and nurtured by the Mahananda river. This jewel of A.O.P Darjeeling produces extraordinary teas whose best leaves are worked specially for Mariage Frères according to the principles of The French Art of Tea. At the dawn of summer when the heavy heat mixes with the nourishing rain of the monsoon, the youngest leaves and their first buds are plucked by hand, benefiting from all the richness of this exceptional Terroir. Dried leaves: The young leaves married to splendid ivory buds deliver notes evoking apricot sablé. Infused leaves: A delicious blend of candy cane and lychee. Liquor: Amber with ruby highlights. With an enveloping and umami texture, the liquor is sustained by nuances of rose, vivacious black currant and velvety white vanilla. The finale is crowned by a wisp of citron honey. A legendary cru.

Mariage Frères discovered this Blue Tea™ during a trip to the magnificent province of Guizhou, in the southwest of China. In the heart of this mountainous isolated terrain – almost 1,200 metres in altitude – grow centenary tea trees nourished by abundant rain and a perfect temperature all year round. The singular quality of this tea resides in the natural, mini-oxidation of the young tender leaves caused by a small insect hungry for tree sap. Natural juices are therefore liberated from the leaves, imparting a gourmet touch to the liquor.

Made with the utmost respect for the traditional methods specific to grand Blue Teas™, the youngest leaves of this quality tea are picked early in the morning, when the fragrances of the plantation blend with the colours of dawn, then worked one by one and rolled, before being suffused with an elegant milky vapor. Dried leaves : The gently rolled, deep green leaves recall a pleasing and comforting fragrance of melted white chocolate joined by a wispy hint of gianduja gracefully carried by a note of ‘panettone’ from the Piedmont. Infused leaves : The first aromas are clearly held together by exotic fruits, a tad tangy like passion fruit and round like ripened lychee while an enveloping note recalling coconut rice manifests, deliciously gourmand. Liquor : Opalescent orange. A natural link between terroir and the cup: the nose of the liquor is a perfect reflection of the leaf (dried and infused). Delicate notes of candied chestnut and creme patissiere charm the palate, caressed by the cup’s milky, supple texture. An ode to eternal pleasures.

PLUCKED FROM A LARGE, CENTURIES-OLD WILD TEA TREE IN THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE In the heart of the Kingdom of Thailand, Mariage Frères has discovered a gift from nature; a wild tea tree hidden in the ancient lands of Opium in the Golden Triangle. In this misty, mountainous region situated along the border of Burma and Laos, nature’s best conditions are reunited: an exceptional terroir at an altitude of 1,500 meters allows this tea tree to let its rich leaves express unique and exquisite saveurs. Dried leaves : The tender leaves and young, elegantly twisted buds decked out in majestic volcanic livery exhale a smooth perfume of frangipani flowers wet from the monsoon, joined by exquisite notes of pink galangal. Infused leaves : Luminous green streaked with garnet. Still warm, the leaves seduce with a gourmet note of praline followed by a fresh burst of rose water. Then from the leaves exudes a fruity-green score evoking freshly-picked starfruit. Liquor : The opalescent orange liquor blends into a round, cashew-tinted hue evoking elegantly fruity sensations of roasted apricot. A pleasantly sweet-and-floral nuance of dainty violet frames a delicious rush of candied quince. Authentic and unbelievably sophisticated. *

Our adventurer’s spirit has taken us far off the beaten track to bring back this unique and surprising tea from a new continent: New Zealand inscribes its unexpected name in our tea catalogue. Irrigated by the largest river on the island, the Waikato (in Maori « flowing water ») is known for its large biodiversity. In the north of the territory, a small garden dedicates itself to the confection of this cru exclusively for Mariage Frères. Dried leaves : The youngest and most beautiful leaves are harvested one by one, then carefully hand-worked to obtain a precious sheen of jade and indigo. The nose evokes fresh bamboo resin amidst an invigorating aroma of camphor wood. The heart of the leaves emit a note of patisserie recalling marshmallow. Infused leaves : Emerald-jade, the leaves open bountifully on a note of Bourbon vetiver and rosewood, carried by a hint of vanilla. The finale is mastered by a floral aroma of tuberose. Liquor : Absinthe green. A fresh, downy veil of almond milk drapes over the palate. Frank and seductive, the finale balances between gelée de nèfle et une crème de figue aux noix. This time our explorer’s spirit has led us far from the beaten path, where we discovered an unusual, unique tea from a new tea-growing Country in the southern hemisphere. Now, like Australia, New Zealand makes an entrance on our list of teas. Located in the Waikato region (Maori for “flowing water”) — named after the largest river in the country and known for its ecological diversity with its green hills, caves, forests and lakes— a small tea estate on North Island has devoted itself to producing 100% organic tea. The dark green leaves have a pronounced aroma dominated by clover honey with a touch of vanilla and a hint of sandal wood. The liquor, shimmering gold, exhales a floral bouquet of poppy accompanied by a subtle and fresh note of cedar. Well balanced, this sparkling tea has extraordinary persistence. This Blue Tea™, growing in altitudes in excess of 2000 meters, is cultivated on the steep slopes of mount Li Shan. The low winter temperatures explain the trees’ slow growth, its small production and its rare and unique taste. Leaves : greenish yellow, wide and rolled into pearls Nose : fruity, evoking green guava Liquor : golden, limpid, brilliant – both gentle and lively; its ample, engulfing texture provides a backdrop for an eloquent floral bouquet (white flowers, acacia), enlivened by its low oxidation and accentuated by a buttery character as well as a tone of vanilla. Its long finish, sweet with little astringency, caresses the palate. An extraordinary garden!

« Red Gown », called Da Hong Pao on Wu Yi Mountain where it is grown, is extremely rare. A tiny estate on a steep slope with sandy soil near a spring provides the tea bushes with morning sun but protects them with cool afternoon shade. The tender buds with red reflections thus benefit from ideal conditions, enhancing all their qualities. Just after picking, leaves undergo a bold oxidation that releases a highly woody taste specific to the soil. Its thick, concentrated liquor and its grand aroma, halfway between chestnut and hazelnut, last long in the mouth. A masterpiece envied by connoisseurs the world over, it has been valued since the Ming dynasty for allegedly favouring a long life.

In northern Thailand, where the climate allows for fruit crops, a little-known estate is perpetuating the tradition of grand oolong teas. The youngest leaves are picked early in the morning when the odours of the garden begin to mingle with the colours of dawn; they are then worked one by one, rolled into jade-green balls. Scented with the red rice typical of Thai mountain regions, they absorb its fragrance to create a pale yet bright yellow-green elixir that is smooth, subtle, and endowed with a powdery, velvety sensation-spirited yet silken, unique and marvellous.
